I am so grateful to all the mentors that I have had during my career, and they are the reason I am a professional mentor today. I only had one formal mentor for a short period of time, but tutors, colleagues, employers, family, and friends have been a great source of support and guidance.
Some colleagues have become lifelong friends as a result of being great confidants, and my world is much richer for it. Most of the time, I wasn’t even aware I was being mentored, but their encouragement and words of wisdom have greatly influenced my actions, and their shoulders to cry on were always appreciated.
Being a mentor is a very rewarding role. The sense of achievement is so great, and my mentees make me very proud. We go on a journey together, and I always learn from them—it definitely is not a one-way street.
So, take a minute to think about your mentors, formal and informal, and how much they have contributed to your development along the way.
In celebration of International Mentoring Day, we at Professional Academy are reaffirming our commitment to mentoring. Our resolution this year is to enhance our mentoring practices through formal Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions, fostering growth and support among our team throughout the year.
