I started out as a shorthand typist in public transport and eventually became a secretary in the press office. At this point, I embarked on a business studies degree at night school, and when the press officer left, I was promoted to her position. Then, I decided to take the Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Qualifications, and my marketing career went from there.
I have enjoyed an extensive career in public relations, communications, and marketing. My experience has been in both private and public sectors, where I worked in public transport, the NHS, and in the marketing department of a large further education institute. A highlight of my career was being responsible for public relations and media liaison around the launch of the country’s first new generation tramway in Manchester, a high-profile project attracting international and national interest.
In 2009, I took a different path, leaving the NHS to undertake a PhD looking into service quality in health care, which I completed in 2013. After that, I began lecturing at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, writing materials for MBA courses, having work published, and now supervising postgraduate students alongside my work at Cambridge Professional Academy.
So, I am proof that you don’t know where a career in marketing might take you, but I can guarantee it will be a journey of discovery – learning about the fundamentals of marketing, using transferable skills, and not least learning so much about yourself on the way.
