Don’t let stress and anxiety stop you from succeeding

Your health and wellbeing are important. It sounds so obvious, but I think we’re all guilty of forgetting it in the day-to-day mele of work, life - and never mind trying to find balance.

Conversations about health and wellbeing are happening more often when talking to students, be they studying Professional Qualifications or Apprenticeships, and, despite agreeing their priority, students are struggling to keep themselves in good shape to be able to succeed – in work, studies and life in general. But we need to be working with our students as whole people and are ready, willing and able to support.

There are several things we at Professional Academy have in place to help. Tutors and Mentors, led by our Head of Operations, Hazel Lott-Canning, are with you on your learning journey and are happy to help you navigate the inevitable bumps in the road. Of course, we can only do that if we are aware of issues or challenges, so it is essential that we build a strong working relationship with students, that they feel comfortable talking to us and know that we genuinely care. Tutor/Mentor sessions, Workshops and Reviews are a constant feature of your learning journey which, hopefully, allows opportunities to talk about issues or challenges in a safe environment.

However, we have been asking ourselves recently what more can we do? As stress and anxiety become one of the biggest barriers to student success.

Therefore, you will see more about general wellbeing in our materials, and we have signed up to the Action for Happiness and the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) movements. I can highly recommend the Action for Happiness 10-day programme. Although feeling in a good place at the time I worked through it, I found the daily task uplifting and easy to do, which made everything else seem less stressful, which in turn reduced any anxiety I might have had.

My Top Tips for Overcoming Stress and Anxiety

  1. Things happen that are out of our control – so, control what you can, acknowledge what you can’t and try to be comfortable with what is.
  2. You are not superhuman – so, acknowledge when you are having a good or bad day and know that you can’t do it all.
  3. Be present in the moment - and breathe.

If you want to explore this subject further, I recommend considering mindfulness, meditation, or just allowing yourself some ‘me time’.

So, please don’t let stress and anxiety put you off studying. We can work together to overcome obstacles to help you achieve.
